Instead of being applied on the spot like the filling, an onlay or inlay is specially crafted in a lab using an impression of the tooth. Porcelain is the material of choice in the dental community thanks to its natural look, translucent surface, and strength after bonding. Inlays are recommended in single-tooth restorations; whereas the onlay is a more involved reconstruction that may cover one or several tooth cusps.

An onlay is a more extensive reconstruction that covers one or more cusps of a tooth. Inlays or onlays may be used to replace simple fillings when a stronger alternative is needed.

What to Expect: The Porcelain Inlay/Onlay Process

Typically takes two dental visits

First Appointment:

• Decay or outdated filling is removed
• Tooth/teeth is slightly altered to prepare for new placement
• Temporary sealant is added
• Impression is taken, sent to dental laboratory, & your custom restoration is crafted

Second Appointment:

• Temporary sealant is removed
• Inlay or onlay is bonded in place & polished
